Watercolor Paper? What’s the difference?

There are so many Watercolor Paper but what is the best? Watercolors Paper is a personal preference.

Rough watercolor paper has prominent tooth or textured surface. If you want a grainy, speckled effect as pools of water collect in the indentations than this will be ideal for your use.

Hot-pressed paper has a fine-grained, smooth surface, and almost no tooth. The paint will dry very quickly. It makes it ideal for large, even washes of color. It is not quite as good for multiple lays of washes but one or two will work great. Since the paper is smooth more layers of paint on the surface will overload the paper quickly. It is great for drawing, and pen and ink washes. Hot-pressed watercolor paper has a fine-grained, smooth surface, with almost no tooth.

Cold-pressed paper has a slightly textured surface, somewhere between rough and hot-pressed paper. Cold-pressed paper is the most often used by watercolor artists because it is good for both large areas of wash but also fine detail.
